When the driver lifts off the brake pedal, trapped air exits rapidly through the valve, allowing brake chambers to retract without delay. Faster air exhaust reduces drag and prepares the vehicle for the next brake application. A sluggish release valve can cause brakes to linger momentarily after pedal input changes. In air brake systems that depend on rapid pressure changes, the Bendix 229859 restores prompt brake release action.
