Routing that high-current circuit through a relay instead of directly through the ignition switch protects the switch contacts from the arcing and wear constant high-current switching would cause. Replacing a relay with worn contacts restores full power delivery instead of a circuit that cuts out intermittently. Because the Bosch 0-332-207-402 mounts into the same relay socket and pin configuration as the original, the wiring harness plugs in without modification.
