Farr Engine Air Filter: A Guide to Keeping the Engine Protected

With almost 80 years of filtration expertise, Farr has gained a reputation as one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of high-quality air and liquid filtration solutions for engine protection and reduced fuel consumption. This brand caters to a wide range of applications, including heavy duty trucks, buses, mining machinery, and off-road equipment. And among its highly acclaimed products is the Farr engine air filter

What does the Farr engine air filter do?

Your truck's engine needs a mixture of air and fuel to operate properly. When there is a lack of air, the fuel can't burn efficiently to provide the maximum energy required to power the engine. But the air needed during combustion must be cleaned before it enters the engine, so this is where the Farr engine air filter comes into play.

The engine air filter helps clean the air before passing through the cylinders to prevent dirt, dust, grit, and other debris from entering the engine. Dirt, dust, and other impurities can cause poor engine performance. That is why the engine air filter is highly critical in trapping this dirt before it can harm the engine.

Why replace the air filter?

The engine air filter traps not just millions of contaminants but billions of dirt, dust, and other impurities, so it can also get clogged over time. A clogged air filter becomes less effective in removing contaminants in the air, obstructs the airflow, and limits the amount of air that reaches the fuel injection system or carburetor. If dirty air or lack of clean air continually enters the engine, your truck can end up with severe engine damage.

Whether you are a trucker or a fleet owner, you know that engine damage is almost always expensive to fix. And if the engine is beyond repair, it even costs more to replace it. Why pay more if you can spend less on a replacement engine air filter as soon as your old filter gets clogged or damaged?

When is the best time to replace the engine air filter?

Most truck manufacturers recommend changing the engine air filter every 15,000 and 30,000 miles or every 12 months, depending on the driving conditions. However, if you typically drive in dusty areas, you might want to have the filter checked and replaced more frequently. Also, it’s good to note the most common signs of a clogged air filter because these often tell you when it’s time to get a replacement.

What are the signs of a bad air filter?

Knowing when to change your truck’s engine air filter is easy. Here are some of the signs to look out for:

  1. Illuminated check engine light - The engine control module is a computer that monitors engine operation and performance. When there’s less oxygen in the exhaust due to a clogged filter, the oxygen sensor sends a signal to the engine control module. The ECM recognizes this as an abnormal condition, so it turns on the check engine light.
  2. Poor fuel economy - One of the most common signs of a dirty engine air filter is a decrease in fuel efficiency. The engine needs proper airflow to operate correctly. When the air filter is clogged, it's more difficult to let the air in, so the engine has to consume more fuel to maintain horsepower. At first, you'll hardly notice the decrease in gas mileage. But after some time, the numbers will drop quickly, and before you know it, you're already filling up the gas tank more often than usual.
  3. Strange engine noises - When the truck is idle, typically, the engine produces a smooth humming sound. But if you start hearing popping, sputtering, or coughing noises, it's most likely that you've got a damaged spark plug resulting from a clogged air filter.
  4. Missing or misfiring engine - A clogged air filter impedes the amount of airflow to the engine. If there's a low air-to-fuel ratio, more fuel will be left unburned during combustion, which causes soot residue to accumulate on the spark plug tip. When the spark plug is unable to deliver a proper spark for igniting the air-fuel mixture, the engine misfires or fails to start altogether.
  5. Poor engine performance - When the filter gets clogged, the engine's ability to generate power for the truck is greatly reduced. To confirm this, try stepping on the gas pedal. If the acceleration is reduced or nonexistent or you notice jerking movements, then it's most likely that the engine is not getting the right amount of air it needs to perform.
  6. Black/dirty exhaust fumes and gasoline smell - When you notice black or dirty exhaust fumes coming out of the exhaust pipe, chances are you've got a bad air filter. The inadequate air supply in the engine leaves some of the fuel unburnt, which the heat in the exhaust might ignite, causing black or dirty exhaust fumes. You might also see a flame at the end of the exhaust, hear popping sounds, or notice a gasoline smell.
  7. Visually dirty engine air filter - Brand-new engine air filters usually look off white or white. So, when the filter becomes darker in color, it means it has got lots of dirt and dust in it. Do check it under the light or during the day since dust cannot be easily seen. If the filter already looks so dark and full of particles, then it's high time you replace it.
