Remove the pipe plug in the gear case cover. Install the water pump gear lash tool (J-38977-A or equivalent) through the gear case cover hole and thread it into the water pump drive gear retaining bolt. The arm of this tool has an inscribed line. Measure the backlash at this line with a dial indicator. The length of the arm (to the line) is the same as the distance from the center of the retaining bolt to the center of the tooth face. This tool assures a 1:1 lash reading. Gear lash specifications are 0.002 - 0.009 in. (0.050 – 0.229 mm). If lash is proper, remove tools and reinstall plug in gear case cover. Torque plug to 24-31 Nm (18-23 lb ft). If proper lash cannot be obtained, inspect the bull gear for wear, play or other damage. Do not proceed unless proper lash is obtained.
