American LaFrance® was a North American vehicle manufacturer specializing in fire engines, fire aerials, and other emergency vehicles and equipment. Founded in 1873, it was one of the oldest manufacturers of fire engine apparatus in the US, starting out with steam-powered, horse-drawn carts before transitioning to motorized vehicles in the early 20th century. But the company is perhaps best known for introducing the “cab-forward” fire engine, giving the driver a wider field of view and became the industry standard up to this day. It was later acquired by Freightliner in 1995 to 2005, with many American LaFrance products built during this period based on the Freightliner or Sterling chassis. The company continued to manufacture fire truck cabs and chassis until ceasing operations in 2014, although many American LaFrance vehicles.
