The Gunite Automatic Slack Adjuster controls brake stroke by compensating for lining wear as the brakes cycle during normal operation. As wear increases, the internal adjusting mechanism regulates pushrod travel to keep slack within specification rather than allowing excess movement to develop. That adjustment is transferred through a 5.5-inch arm, which establishes the correct leverage between the brake chamber and the S-cam.
